CCTV footage later showed that on 11 June, Jemma Mitchell, a woman Chong knew through church, arrived at her home carrying a blue suitcase and left hours later with the same case appearing significantly heavier. Two weeks after Chong was reported missing, her remains were discovered in a remote woodland area near Salcombe, Devon, more than 200 miles away from her home. The discovery led police to focus their investigation on Mitchell, who was arrested in early July after detectives linked her movements and digital activity to the case. At Mitchell's trial, prosecutors said the motive for the killing was financial. Chong had previously considered giving Mitchell a large sum of money for home renovations but later changed her mind. Investigators also found a document on Mitchell's computer that attempted to redirect Chong's estate in her favour. Prosecutors argued that Mitchell travelled to Devon to leave Chong's remains in an attempt to distance herself from the crime. Mitchell denied all involvement, but after a detailed trial at the Old Bailey, a jury found her guilty in October 2022. The case gained widespread public attention due to the planning involved and the digital evidence presented in court. Mitchell was sentenced the following day to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 34 years. The sentencing made history as the first involving a woman to be televised in England and Wales.
