Davis, over a decade of solo development. Davis envisioned it as a digital "Third Temple" instructed by God. Why TempleOS Is Special • Built 100% From Scratch: Unlike modern operating systems (like Windows, macOS, or Linux) built by massive teams and millions of lines of borrowed code, Davis wrote every single component himself—including the kernel, bootloader, graphics library, custom compiler, and file system. • HolyC Programming Language: Davis created a custom dialect of C and C++ called HolyC, which allows just-in-time compilation directly from the command line, live-coding, and running functions without parentheses or arguments. • Ring 0 Only (No User-Kernel Separation): The operating system runs everything in ring 0 (the highest level of CPU privilege) with a single shared address space and no memory protection. While this means a single coding mistake can crash the whole system, it gives the programmer total, unrestricted control over the hardware. • No Internet or Networking: TempleOS has no network drivers or internet connectivity. Davis intentionally left networking out, believing it was unnecessary and that the computer's purpose was to serve as a direct communication channel to God. • The "Divine Oracle" Feature: The OS includes a built-in pseudo-random text generator that pulls words and phrases from the King James Bible, which Davis used as an oracle game to "talk to God". • Extreme Lightweight Simplicity: The entire operating system fits in under 100,000 to 121,000 lines of code (occupying less than 2 megabytes) and boots up in a fraction of a second. It runs at a classic 640x480 VGA resolution with a 16-color limit, which Davis stated was requested by God to make it easy for children to draw illustrations.
