I've replaced entire water heaters and multiple heating elements. It is a ton cheaper to replace a heating element than buying a new water heater or hiring someone to replace it either.

done that after the element blew while it was -30c outside, the bugger was so stuck it twisted off. had to drill out the core and use a sawblade to cut a piece of the thread out.
