Ali Birra, born Ali Mohamed Mussa in 1947 in Dire Dawa, grew up surrounded by music, culture, and community. Even as a young boy, he loved singing and dancing, and by 13, he had already joined the Urji Bakalcha band. During their 1963 Eid performance, he sang Birradha Bari’e, and that moment gave him the name the world would come to love: Ali Birra. His journey was full of challenges. The Haile Selassie regime forced his band to break up simply because they chose to perform in Afaan Oromo. Ali spent years abroad, living in different countries, learning new languages, and performing with Ethiopian legends around the world. No matter where he went, he carried the identity and spirit of the Oromo people with him. When he returned home, Ali became involved with the Mecha Tulema Association, contributing to cultural events that brought him unwanted attention from the government. Still, he never stopped creating, inspiring, and speaking through his music. In 1973, he released Abba Laffa, the first-ever published Oromo album, a historic moment that changed the direction of Oromo music forever. His songs spoke about justice, culture, and dignity. They encouraged generations to stand up for who they are. In recognition of his lifelong contribution to music and culture, Ali Birra was awarded an honorary doctorate, a symbol of the respect he earned not only as an artist but as a cultural leader and educator. He spent his later years in Bishoftu with his wife, Lily Marcos, and continued to be a source of pride for millions. As we remember his passing this month, we honour more than a musician. we honour Dr. Ali Birra, a storyteller, a cultural guardian, and a true legend. Rest in peace, Dr. Ali Birra.🕊️ Drop your favourite song below👇 #netelazemaet #ethiopianmusic #alibirra #ethiopiques #oromomusic
