Unfortunately this isn’t a decision many parents can make anymore. Our school made an absolute rule against “redshirting” last year because so many parents, especially those with boys, were opting to delay just to give them an advantage. If I would have tried to delay, they would have placed by son straight in 1st grade because K isn’t mandatory and being 5 by 9/1 is the only threshold now. The entire system needs to change. Holding kids back isn’t the answer. Developmentally appropriate curriculum and classrooms are what’s lacking.

I’m a teacher who whole heartedly believes in delaying kindergarten. But as a mom of 3, It was not financially possible to do another year of daycare at $3,600 a month. I started my twins in kindergarten, and they will turn 6 in June. Not ideal, but I also did not have much of an option anymore unfortunately

It’s so weird to me that people put their kids into kindergarten at 4 turning 5 where I grew up everybody going into kindergarten was five turning six and if they went into kindergarten early, they usually got held back in kindergarten or first grade

My sister and I are 6 years apart. I turned kindergarten 2 months before turning 5 and she started 2 months before turning 6. She did SO much better, socially, in school than I did

this is why kids in asia out perform us in the west in terms of academic. kids overthere already learning simple maths in daycare. our kids can do a lot more than we think
