The Ground Shook and Venezuela Changed Forever: My Eyewitness Account of the June 24, 2026 Earthquakes from the Heart of Caracas It was a Wednesday evening like many others in Caracas. The city hummed with its usual mix of resilience and quiet struggle. I was in my apartment in the eastern part of the capital, around 6 PM local time on June 24, 2026, when the world turned upside down. What started as a normal day people heading home from work, families gathering, the distant sounds of traffic became the deadliest natural disaster Venezuela has faced in over a century. Two massive earthquakes, striking just 39 seconds apart, magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, ripped through our northern coast and shook us to our core. The Moment Everything Changed I felt the first tremor as a low rumble, like thunder rolling under the floor. Then it hit violent, sideways shaking that threw me off balance. Furniture slid across the room, cabinets flew open, and the walls groaned like a living thing in pain. I dove under the doorway, heart pounding, as the building swayed. It felt endless, though it was probably less than a minute. The second quake followed almost immediately, even stronger, deeper, more terrifying. The floor rolled like ocean waves. Glass shattered. People screamed from neighboring apartments. In Caracas, we’re no strangers to tremors, but nothing like this. The epicenters were near Morón and San Felipe in Yaracuy state, about 100-170 km west, but the shallow depths (around 10-22 km) amplified the destruction across the densely populated central and coastal regions. The shaking was felt as far as Bogotá, Colombia. In the capital, buildings cracked, some collapsed entirely especially older structures or those weakened by years of under-maintenance. I stumbled outside with my neighbors into the streets, which filled instantly with thousands of panicked people. Phones barely worked at first networks overwhelmed. Power went out in swaths of the city. We huddled in open areas, parks, and parking lots, staring at our buildings, wondering if they’d hold or come crashing down in an aftershock. Over 130 aftershocks followed in the days after, the largest around 4.8, keeping everyone on edge. Even today, on June 30, smaller ones jolt us awake. The Devastation in La Guaira and Beyond While Caracas suffered significant damage cracked high-rises in areas like Altamira, Los Palos Grandes, and El Paraíso, collapsed buildings, and widespread fear the coastal state of La Guaira bore the brunt. Just north of us, entire apartment blocks pancaked: floors stacking one atop another in seconds, trapping residents in a deadly crush of concrete and rebar. Over 100 buildings collapsed there alone. Catia La Mar, Caraballeda, and Macuto turned into scenes of apocalyptic ruin. Rescue workers and ordinary citizens clawed through rubble with bare hands at first. Stories emerged of miracles: a 60-year-old woman pulled alive after 86 hours. Families calling out names into the voids, listening for taps or cries. One survivor described hiding under a column as her building shifted. Another family survived because their structure tilted forward rather than imploding. But for so many, there was only silence. By June 29, official figures reported around 1,450 to 1,719 dead, over 5,000 injured, thousands missing, and tens of thousands homeless. The real numbers may be higher thousands still unaccounted for in remote spots or under debris. Hospitals overflowed. Makeshift camps sprang up. Electricity, water, and communications remained patchy. Venezuela’s long-standing crises economic hardship, infrastructure strain made everything worse. Many buildings weren’t built or maintained to modern seismic standards, leadin to those tragic pancake collapses. In Caracas, I saw neighbors sharing what little they had: food, water, flashlights. People slept in cars or streets for days, afraid to go back inside. Schools damaged, metro temporarily suspended afte
