Congratulations to actor and filmmaker Ed Harris — a friend of Return to Freedom and wild horses — for being name a recipient of the inaugural Robert Redford Luminary Award. We’re thrilled that Ed will be honored on Jan. 23 during a #sundancefilmfestivalFestival evening honoring the late Robert Redford’s legacy, vision and enduring mission to support independent storytellers. Hungarian film director and screenwriter Gyula Gazdag will also receive the award, which will recognize their lasting dedication and visionary contributions to @sundanceorg Institute Labs. Redford served on RTF’s board of directors and often lent his name to our advocacy work in support of minimally intrusive management of wild horses and burros on our public lands. As we said when he passed away in September, it’s special when someone as iconic as Bob also turns out to be a wonderful person. That’s true of Ed, too, an acting legend who has given his time and lent his name in support of RTF and our advocacy work. Ed recorded this public service announcement and took part in a photo shoot for a 2018 cover story for a Cowboys & Indians Magazine cover story at our Lompoc, Calif., headquarters sanctuary — complete with his famous black hat from HBO's "Westworld." Ed and his talented wife, Amy Madigan, have signed support letters for wild horses and in opposition to horse slaughter. In an especially a meaningful moment for us, Ed and two other longtime supporters, actress Wendie Malick, and writer and filmmaker Robert Knott, presented our founder and president, Neda DeMayo, with the Special Tribute Award at the 2024 Daytime Beauty Awards ceremony. Ed and his longtime friend and “Appaloosa” writing partner Robert Knott even recorded a video wishing our wild horse ambassador Spirit well on his 25th birthday!
