I think the Americans get confused. So - unlimited medical leave - means it’s issued by a doctor. And yes, it can be 2 weeks for a flu or 5 days for a cold, but it’s issued by the doctor and paid for by the country, not the company.

This was me and my German coworker the first time I got sick here. She was like "I understand you're American but please go to the doctor". The doctor made me stay home for a week 🙃

When I first moved to Canada, I was extremely confused that they gave me 5 days where I was "allowed to be sick". We sometimes had people out sick for weeks in Germany.

In Finland you also get paid sick leave and they cannot fire you due to your illness. Many companies don’t even require a doctor’s note for short illnesses like a cold.

That’s not quite true. No employer tells you to take two weeks off sick. Usually, they just send you home for the day, expecting you to be healthier and back at work the next day.
