It’s hard to watch these ads continue to circulate when they go directly against the WHO Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes. Companies can’t advertise in the usual ways, so they’ve adapted by using social media to slip through loopholes. And it works. These messages can make parents second guess their breastfeeding, their supply, and their overall success. Not to mention, the claims are often misleading. All formula meets the same standards..none is truly “closer to breastmilk,” despite what marketing suggests. We already limit ads for things like alcohol and cigarettes on these platforms because of WHO codes, yet formula gets a pass even though these regulations exist to protect public health. 😣
