@crybabynattie: I think a lot of daughters especially Black daughters carry this complicated mix of love, hurt, loyalty, and longing. My mom wasn’t terrible, she just didn’t always give what I needed. She made choices that had consequences we’re still healing from, and sometimes it’s hard not to wonder what my life could’ve looked like with more support, more softness, more guidance. I always wished we had that easy, close mother–daughter bond. The kind where you can talk about anything, cry without feeling judged, or just feel held. Instead, it often felt like daughters had to be tough while the boys got all the tenderness. And that’s such a common reality in the Black community that we stop questioning it… even though it affects us deeply. And even now, as an adult, it still stings watching families who are close and genuinely loving toward each other. It’s a reminder of what I wanted but didn’t get. But despite everything,the mistakes, the distance, the moments she wasn’t who I needed there’s still a part of me that would choose her, over and over.
