I maintain that my logic makes sense… even if wrong!!

He’s not wrong “when ____ enters” should probably be written “after _____ enters” it’s not very intuitive as is that enter triggers happen after the permanent enters

The subtle difference between “as it enters” and “when it enters” are hard to distinguish for even seasoned players

I agree with dad. it hasn't entered, it is in the process of entering, you don't control it yet. Entering my car lasts from when I'm still outside until I sit down. if I had a trigger that took place when I enter my car I'd get to choose any point in that process for it to resolve.

would be totally right if it was "as this enters".
but since it's "when", it's already on field.

Explain using the stack and it's immediately obvious why it's not intuitive.

If I card says “when” it means it is on the battlefield. If a card says “as”, like Deadpool, it happens before it’s on the battlefield

I had a buddy that thought Llanowar elves t: to add green meant he added a forest to his battlefield. He has a whole side deck of forests to add when he tapped llanowar. Magic is such a funny game sometimes

I’m so glad ETB stages being kind of confusing isn’t just me. Like some cards see themselves, entering with counters, is a card “cast” if it’s countered, all that jazz.

I think every new player has done this, me included a few years ago

an easy way to think of this, is if it says "when this enters the battlefield" that happens after the thing that says it, is on the battlefield. Because that permanent has to be on the battlefield for the ability to happen.

Yeah this is one of the least intuitive things in magic imo, and then once you get the hang of enters triggers you get hit with cast triggers

I 100% understand where he is coming from based on how a lot of things work on the stack. I love his process of learning though, this is a wonderful bonding experience you guys get to have.

Enter is what happens after it is cast. Once it has entered it is on the battlefield.
