As it should be. Most promotions put you in a position of leadership over others. Technical skills aren’t the most important factor in a leadership role. Leadership skills are an entirely different specialism and require new skills. In fact, IQ will often mean the best technicians are promoted, when in fact EQ is what makes a great leader. Performance culture, influence without authority and coaching skills are what really matter in senior roles.

And you can’t be too good at your current position. If you’re too good at what you’re doing now they can’t afford to lose you in it. It’s the bubbly, friendly outgoing, ignorant person that gets promoted.
