The CIA Stole a Sunken Soviet Submarine With a Giant Claw — Project Azorian #coldwar #cia #declassified #submarine #historytok You know the phrase "we can neither confirm nor deny"? Almost every American has heard it — but almost nobody knows it was invented for THIS mission. 🤯 THE CIA STOLE A SUNKEN SOVIET SUBMARINE?! In March 1968, the Soviet submarine K-129, armed with nuclear missiles, sank in the Pacific Ocean. Moscow searched for two months and never found it. But America's secret underwater SOSUS microphones heard it implode — and a US spy submarine photographed the wreck resting 16,500 feet down, three miles below the surface. So in 1974, the CIA did the craziest thing in Cold War history: they convinced billionaire Howard Hughes to front a fake deep-sea mining company, built the 618-foot Hughes Glomar Explorer with a hidden moon pool inside, sailed it right over the wreck while a Soviet tug watched from miles away — and lowered a giant steel claw named "Clementine" three miles down to grab the entire submarine. Halfway up, three of the claw's steel tines snapped. Two thirds of the submarine fell back to the ocean floor forever. But the forward section made it — carrying two nuclear torpedoes and the bodies of six Soviet sailors. And here is the part that gets me: the American crew buried those six enemy sailors at sea with full military honors, in English and in Russian, and filmed it. The price tag? About $800 million in 1974 — roughly $5 BILLION in today's money. And when reporters started asking questions, the CIA invented a brand-new answer the world had never heard before: "We can neither confirm nor deny." That is the Glomar response — and you have been hearing its echo ever since. Follow for more declassified stories they never taught you in school. New video every week. ⚓
