My ex husbands family is direct descendants of survivors of the donner party. His aunt has uncontrollable shaking. She’s been tested for everything including Parkinson’s and she’s negative. They think because of the cannibalism- she has the shakes as a genetic pass down

People don’t realize that the Donner Party was infamous from the very beginning. The cabin site was a tourist attraction back in the 1850s!

The absolute craziest thing to me is that there were three SEPARATE instances of cannibalism. The groups didn’t know that the others had resorted to it as well until after it was all over.

It was so strange to me, growing up in California close to where this occurred, our school taught it so thoroughly. We read Patty Reed's Doll in elementary school etc. so realizing other schools don't cover it in detail really threw me when I found out.

One of those older kids that survived said they NEVER went anywhere without some kind of food on them after they were rescued. And the snow BURIED their wagons within a day or two. They thought they could still make it past the mountains, but they waited a day or two too late.

Idk if someone has mentioned this in the comments already but Abe Lincoln considered joining the Donner Party! He knew James Reed, one of the leaders & they had discussed the trip & Abe was interested but Mary Todd was against the idea since she was pregnant & they already had a toddler at home.

the lore lodge has a really good almost 3 hour video on the donner party and it’s my favorite yearly rewatch 😅 i wish we knew more ab the natives that helped them as well. other than two that passed with them
