Call me McCoy, because I’d never step into one of those death traps

The clone is convinced it's you, in the same way you are convinced you're the same person as child you, despite sharing almost no atoms with that person.

Everyone in the entire Trek universe is a clone hundreds of copies out. Meat puppet ghosts of the original person who died the 1st time they stepped into a transporter.

didn't they have 2 Kirks and 2 Rikers? That's good enough evidence for cloning as I've seen

Please don't ask Barclay this. Troi's entire schedule would be full for months lol

The idea that we would die if our particles were torn apart and then reassembled perfectly hasnt been evaluated scientifically and proven. It's just based our our sense of continuity of consciousness. No ome knows if thats true

To be fair, the original Star Trek wasn’t hard science fiction - the transporters were a fantastical concept that wasn’t really rooted in science. TNG had to continue the concept but tried to build on it with a lot of treknobabble and concepts to try and give it a coating of legitimacy. But it, obviously, doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. But in-show, the implication is that it’s you that is rematerialized, not killed and reconstructed as a perfect recreation.

sort of. They can Beam all that material., but they can't capture the data of your conscious?

Quantum immortality allows for transporting, as conciseness is non local

The 1995 outer limits episode "Dark Matters" which aired on June 2, 1995, and explored a teleporter-related paradox where a duplicate is created, raising ethical questions about life and death. This is a great thought piece for questioning transporter technology

Is this the same kind of science that’s behind what happens to Mike TV from Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory?

Think about this. First it’s hundreds of years in the future so we can figure it out. Ie when I was a child I could not understand how a walkie talkie can only be heard by one person. Kirk to spoke. Now we have cell phones. Second fact it’s a TV show 🤓

watched a long form video several years ago that took the position that the original must be destroyed to account for paradoxes. it's been a while, not sure which creator and if it was specifically paradox or a different term but something disallowed by quantum mechanics.

For all I know, aliens beam me up to their ship every night for kicks. I might’ve died in such a transporter thousands of times and have no idea that it’s taken place. So does it matter? Do I lose any (metaphorical) sleep over it? No, I don’t. Use the damn transporter.

our body's atoms are swapped out (nearly 100%) every year or so? Any different?
