I feel like in some instances, there's even a different sort of connotation to future tense in English that doesn't really exist in German. "I'm going to the party tomorrow" sounds neutral or even excited, but "I'll go to the party tomorrow" sounds like you needed to be convinced or maybe like the sentence should include an additional condition ("but only if ..."). Which makes the future tense more versatile in English than in German, imo. In German, it really does only sound overly formal.

i'm very familiar with this as the future tense doesn't exist in finnish, my native language :) we also don't have the present progressive (at least in the same way as english does)
