A place where water doesn’t just flow… it swirls like it’s alive. Devil’s Bathtub is tucked just off the Grandma Gatewood Trail, about 0.1 miles south of Upper Falls in the Old Man’s Cave region. It’s not a classic waterfall instead, Old Man’s Fork Creek plunges into a bowl-shaped hollow carved out of Blackhand sandstone, creating a frothy, turbulent pool. This geological bowl was shaped over millions of years by water and erosion a natural sculpture more than a cascade. The swirling basin is deceptively deep, and while it looks tempting, swimming is not allowed it’s dangerous, and many people have slipped trying to climb out. To reach it, hike along the Old Man’s Cave Trail, cross a stone footbridge, and step into that carved rock bowl. Continue on if you want: past Devil’s Bathtub are Sphinx Head and Lower Falls, making for a roughly 2-mile round trip with gorge views and cliff edges.
