@vt.physics: How Ulexite Works: Nature's Own Fiber-Optic Marvel Ulexite is a naturally occurring mineral famous for its striking “TV rock” effect, where images beneath it appear projected onto its surface. This happens because ulexite is made of thousands of long, parallel, transparent fibers that behave like natural fiber-optic cables. When light enters these fibers, it travels along them through total internal reflection, a phenomenon where light hits the inner boundary at a steep enough angle that it reflects back inward instead of escaping. Since the fibers are aligned in the same direction, each one carries a tiny piece of the image straight upward without scattering. Together, they transmit the entire picture from the bottom of the mineral to the top, creating the illusion of a built-in display. #science #physics #minerals #facts #nature
