@treeswithdrake: Would you try eating Ginkgo nuts? In today’s episode, we talk about one of the worlds most beloved (and ancient) trees! Stick around for some lesser-known facts🕺🏻 #Treetok #plantsoftiktok🌱 #treefacts #ginkgo #tiktokencyclopediacontest
Because Ginkgo biloba is so unique, taxonomists had to create for it its own Division….Ginkgophyta, its own Class….Ginkgoosida, its own Order….Ginkgoales, and its own Family….Ginkgoaceae. There are two surviving natural stands of Ginkgo biloba in north eastern China. The word “ginkgo” is a misinterpretation of the Chinese name for this tree but has been accepted through its now common usage. Common names in China translate as “silver apricot tree” (because of the “fruit” appearance) and “duck foot tree” (because of the leaf appearance). All this only scratches the surface of odd information about ginkgos….for an augmentation of what you have learned here, please look up Cor Kwant’s award winning website, The Ginkgo Pages. Oh, and although there is only one genus and one species of this tree, there are over 250 different cultivars…..how? See The Ginkgo Pages.

theyre not great at reproducing because their original pollinators are extinct so they rely on the wind. also, their fruits were intended to attract specific prehistoric birds, which very likely helped in seed dispersal. now they mostly rely on human intervention to plant!

Their leaves usually fall all at once (or close to it),usually around the first frost, because they form a “scar” at the petiole where the stem breaks off. Other trees form the “scar” gradually over time but ginkgos do it at the same time so they fall around the same time as well. Keep spreading the knowledge!!

So they're not native to North America? I think they're so pretty and have debated planting one, but I wasn't sure if that would be adding an invasive species. Any thoughts? I love your series!

Drake - I’m wondering if this gorgeous Ginkgo tree (and others) survived the recent ice storms in Nashville? 😔

The stink comes from butyric acid. The same chemical that is produced by rancid butter. Also the stinky seed coat produces urushiol, which is found in poison ivy and can cause the same rash. Also, not fruit since it's a gymnosperm, like others already mentioned.

It makes me so sad to hear people in my area request that the city cut down mature female ginkgo trees on blvds simply because of the smell that only lasts a short time. There are two females a few houses down from me, and while it's not a great smell, it's a short inconvenience to endure while gaining so much from these beautiful trees.

Our city won’t allow them to be planted anymore within city limits. They’re a “nuisance.” Why?

ginko trees can have both sexes present in one plant. it's possible for most of the tree to be female but one branch or so may be male.
