it’s so annoying and exhausting having to constantly come out/people being shocked

It’s privilege to have the safety, but you are ALWAYS calculating the risk, which is exhausting

Servers constantly asking if 2 checks or 1 seems so minor but gets really old and frustrating.

As a straight passing person, I plan to correct people forever. Being married to a woman is a dream. I’m not going to let people believe I’m a man’s wife

My wife and I are both straight passing and when we were looking at wedding venues the one lady said “wow 2 best friends getting married on the same day??” 🥴

So relatable. Sometimes when I don’t correct I feel oddly guilty that I’m hiding myself. But sometimes when I do correct it just feels so awkward and unnecessary.

As an elementary school teacher living in a more conservative leaning city in california, Im TERRIFIED for the lash back I’ll get from parents when they find out have a wife

When my wife and I checked into the hotel the night before our wedding, we told them we were the ones getting married but they didn’t believe us and gave us a regular room. Random (straight couple) family members got given the big fancy room which was meant to be for us 😫

Ive decided to always correct people bc maybe it will make them not say "boyfriend" or "husband" to the next person

A client asked me today if I am married/dating & I said no 😁 (I’ve been with my partner for 3 years). Never know if I’ll lose clients if I’m honest about it..

My wife and I were at our hotel after our wedding in our very feminine wedding dresses and someone asked where our grooms were, and said something about how cool it must be to have a double wedding. Umm. Sir. Let me introduce you to the concept of lesbians.

It is annoying but the first thought that always goes through my mind is “is it safe for me to correct this person” I shouldn’t have to care what someone else thinks but I don’t trust men either so I always get scared when correcting them

We always get asked if we’re sisters, two cheques, what does your husband do etc etc hah sometimes it’s comical but sometimes we don’t correct due to safety. We do feel like we have a lot of privilege because we get to choose when to disclose and we also get to know who are the real homophobes!

Definitely exhausting. Especially since me and my wife go out to eat a lot and are constantly asked if we’re sisters.

As a straight passing person, all of this is extremely frustrating & exhausting to experience. I also am constantly coming out as well, am I going to be safe to simply exist, having to “teach” others. Thank you for sharing so many of our truths 😩

I can see where that would get old. Sometimes I don’t even want to say my son and his husband if I’m not in the mood. I’m certainly not ashamed of them and I wouldn’t change a thing, but sometimes I just don’t feel like having a conversation about it.

same experience here. i think being straight passing has made me a little more internally homophobic to myself like i’m worried about looking gay and yet i don’t care if people look gay and i am gay so who cares? it’s really effed me up a bit and assuming i’m heterosexual and not bi or gay or even trans or non binary for that matter makes me want to present more visibly queer and yet i never do because im afraid of being othered. idk i think it actually sucks to be in this gray area but again its kind of a privilege i guess. i don’t present straight on purpose this is just my preferred expression.

Couldn’t have said it better myself… I constantly find myself in limbo with patients who have assumed that I have a husband, but I don’t think they pass the vibe check so I’m constantly saying they and their and my spouse rather than giving it a gender term because it feels weird to say husband, but I don’t feel safe to say wife

You don’t owe anyone your energy. Let them think or say what they want to think or say and move on with your peace. There is so much more in life to devote your energy to. Free yourself ❤️

Same. I can be on a date with my obviously queer presenting wife and still get mistaken as straight. But also there is this feeling of wanting to use my straight passing privilege to provide more visibility against the bigoted people that stereotype queer people.
