The narrative felt disconnected from Indonesia’s real needs. Jakarta’s sinking was used as the emotional justification, yet relocating the capital doesn’t solve that. What Jakarta actually needs is better management of groundwater extraction, drainage, zoning, and coastal engineering. Moving the capital came across as running from the problem instead of fixing it. This pattern shows up too often in Indonesia: instead of repairing what’s broken, we just start over somewhere else. The money should have been, and still should be, directed toward real, urgent needs, not toward something so extravagant.

Maybe I should start with: Is IKN urgent? In my opinion, no. Many issues and matters are more urgent and effective for advancing Indonesia (education, health, employment, industry, etc.). In my opinion, IKN is too big to fail. It's a shame that a lot of the state budget has already been spent if IKN is suddenly stopped. The most appropriate thing now is to answer how the relocation of the center of government is something worthwhile.

Moving the national capital from Jakarta to IKN is an ultra enormous move. In the Malaysian experience, Putrajaya became the nation's new Administrative Centre while KL remains as the capital city. Even the Parliament remains in KL.
