If you ask a chatbot whether it is scared about being turned off, it’ll give you an answer, often quite a moving answer. And so it’s tempting to wonder whether it’s telling the truth. It’s tempting to wonder whether machines can think or have feelings at all. But, according to the philosopher and AI researcher Murray Shanahan, machines aren’t thinking. They are just playing a role. Shanahan asks us to look at what machines are actually doing. They have digested an enormous quantity of human writing, and, from it, they improvise the next plausible thing a character would say in a certain role-playing environment. They won’t be themselves. They won’t even do what is true or right. They will do what is most fitting for a situation that you give them. If you ask them to be a pirate, they will be a pirate. If you ask them if they are scared, they will do what 10,000 science fiction novels have told them to do. And Shanahan argues that we risk confusing the performance for reality. We think the actor is Hamlet. We think Ian McKellen actually is a wizard. But, of course, the deeper philosophical question is how far humans are actually different, because thinkers like Erving Goffman argue that there is no ‘authentic’ or ‘actual’ human essence. We are all just playing a role. We are given a script, we are given a costume, and we are left to do the best we can in the environment that we have. So, what do you think? Are chat bots just imitating life, and imitating thought, or is there something deeper going on? And are humans actually that much different?
