@thesmallmighty: Working in corporate can feel opaque because no one teaches you the rules. Working hard isn’t necessarily valuable. Be strategic, make choices. The big goal is your success. Business success is a strategy #corporatelife #strategicthinking #career #choices
Learning this now. The super stressed out person who works until 8pm is rarely the one making the promotion.

come to work last. do absolute minimum so you don't get pulled by the boss and leave first and get maximum pay

this is what I learnt this year and now I am extremely diplomatic, selfish and only do what favors me.

My goal is to do the least amount of work for most amount of pay. I find work that lets me accomplish other things, school, certifications, clean my house, apply to better jobs. 😁

it’s odd because in essence I agree with you. but rn in my company we have this young manager who is brilliant and does everything, he is basically the golden boy of the company and leadership absolutely adores him. I think he even gets paid more than me now.

Do I know all of this? Yes. Do I still overdo it, also yes. I may work for them, but I also take pride in my work. I also know my limits and have no problems speaking up. Like I did yesterday when I told my boss, nope I can't take anything else right now. I'll let you know when I can and he didn't have any issues with it.

My harshest lesson learned is that being exceptional at your job can work to your detriment. My boss refused to promote me to another role because “you’re doing your current well so well, we cannot afford to move you into another role”

It’s not complicated- I retired only a few years ago as an executive reporting to the CEO of a public company in Aust. Be diligent, listen to what your boss really wants (listen, not just hear him/ her - LISTEN- ) AND then deliver- do it your way but just deliver! Make them look good - the company wins, he/she wins and then You win . That’s all I did - that was the main driver. Of course there is company politics- use your EQ to navigate- best advice here - don’t get involved and NEVER EVER say anything to anyone about someone your not prepared to repeated publicly- that will keep you much quieter and focused. I never worked long hours - only occasionally when there was an urgent issue and the situation warranted it. Didn’t work weekends but did travel for work on the weekends- mostly my choice or to meet a customer expectation- I loved my corporate life and the people- no, not every day is roses 🌹- not saying that

Doing everything for the salary you ALREADY have means they never need to promote you. They can ask you to do more and more for that same salary because they know you’ll do it

Couldn’t agree more with this. Have learnt it the hard way - and seen other, possibly less smart but more strategic people (therefore ‘corporate smarter’ , I guess’

Do things that make you visible, that’s what will move you forward. Paying too much time doing meaningless tasks will just burn you out in the long run 👏

I know that you're right but I'm not ready to accept this yet. This week I needed to summarize my CV and reference projects for a bid and realized there's more flavors I can pick from than you'll find at a sushi bar.
