@dr.yousufzafar: A biopsy is often the only way to get to a cancer diagnosis. There’s a potential risk with any procedure, but in most cases, the benefit outweighs the risk. Have you heard this myth before?

My step dad went to hospital with stomach pains in July, through scans they found a few small legions on his liver (cancer), they couldn’t find where the cancer originated and after 3 biopsy’s in his stomach found the cause. A matter of weeks after these biopsy’s the cancer spread like wildfire into his whole stomach and lower back. I can’t say for sure as I’m not a doctor but I always believed the biopsy’s accelerated the cancer.

Yes, it can. It happened to my husband during his biopsy from the liver. Some of the cancer cells fell out during the track back which resulted in tumour cells developing around the rib and subcutaneous tissue. This resulted in another surgery, which included a partial rib resection. Obviously human error, but it definitely IS a possibility. Important to tell people the absolute truth. Sadly we were part of the 1% club.

It's not a myth... it's a fact.. text book possibly teaches you that... I watched my best friends grow like wildfire in a few weeks.. its protected in a sheath until the biopsy is done.. that's how business is built.

This is good to know. My husband has a fairly large carcinoma on his left native kidney (kidney transplant recipient). I am not sure yet if they will biopsy as CAT shows that the cancer is isolated to the kidney, and surgical removal is the cure (I pray). I am glad that he got food poisoning or he would have never known.

But... what about the exceedingly rare ptimary gastric synovial sarcoma my son got 2 years ago? They did a biopsy not knowing whst it was. Sent to & dx by Mayo. He's seen at MD Anderson. Unknown margins on 1st biopsy, "seemed" to get it all. Now they found another spot 🥺.
