For those interested: when things get hot they expand. The glass that was directly hit by the laser expanded before the surrounding glass, this caused the surrounding glass to crack from the pressure. This is also why you shouldn't pour hot water on your windshield during the winter.

there's nothing there for the laser to hit so the energy or most of the energy will go through. obviously it shattered because the glass heated up rapidly. if there was paint on the back side or you'll use a different laser for a different spectrum, you might get a different result.
