In Kyoto we said “arigato” to our Uber driver and he told us to say “ookini” there instead. I thought he’d taught us a bad word at first cause every time we’d use “ookini” in Kyoto instead of “arigato” the locals would look so shocked and start laughing. It really is just how you say thank you in the regional dialect, but I guess it isn’t used super often by tourists cause they were always so excited and pleased. 😂
