@drashbowden: Series: What's the worst thing you've seen as a doctor? Case 3: this most surreal case that brought be to tears on the way home. If there was an exercise in empathy, it might look something like this. Imagine you received the news that your dad has a terminal brain tumour, he may have 6 months to live but could go through risky surgery to extend that by a year or 3. You don't really understand any of the medical jargon but because your dad's an engineer he's fascinated by it and brings you to his radiotherapy appointments. You see him before and after not just one brain surgery. You get the phone call that he died overnight while you're at medical school. Now finish your medical degree, without him to see you graduate, and break the news to a family in emergency at the end of your shift. #doctor #medicine #braintumor

Something that chocked me is how much a regular UTI can make (specifically elderly) patients so confused and mentally affected. It’s so common as well sadly.

If you are/were too junior to make the diagnosis, you are probably too junior to deliver the news, as well.

That’s what I admire most about healthcare in the UK… the human touch. This is priceless. I wish you well in your career, Sir. You have my sincere respect!

My mum also passed away from a brain tumour. It was in the lining of her brain and they couldn’t operate. They tried radiotherapy but it backfired and swelled the tumour and she slipped into a coma 😞

Thank you, I'm sorry you had to go through such a heavy time with your dad, but I'm sure it has helped shape you into an amazing, empathetic Dr

Patients often forget that us medical staff are human as well and have had our share of loss, grief and trauma. We get slated every turn and shouted out and screamed at in the emergency department and patients never stop to think that they are shouting to a fellow human. Stay strong

Ash...grief can and does, creep up and take over. I never really got upset about my mums passing until it just struck me in the middle of a super market aisle. It's scary how it can do that. You will change many lives.
