I’m a Tea Sommelier and welcome back to my cold brew tea series where I make a new cold brew week this summer. The secret to making the best iced tea is to cold brew it. I’m making 5 different cold brew teas using loose tea. I’m cold brewing an English breakfast, a black tea, an oolong, a Jasmine green tea, a white tea, and hibiscus. Don’t fall for the marketing gimmick of teas labeled for cold brewing. You can cold brew any tea. Use 1 ½ teaspoons of tea for every cup of water. One new thing I started doing is muddling or crushing black and oolong teas to release more flavor. Cold brewing is a method where you steep tea in cold water for a few hours in the refrigerator. Because cold water extracts flavors slowly, you get a sweeter, smoother tea without the bitterness. With cold brew tea, you don’t need to boil any water, so it’s the perfect drink to make in the summer. Put tea and cold or room temperature water into a container. Cover and place in the refrigerator for 8-12 hours. For green tea, refrigerate for 3-6 hours. After the steep, strain the tea and it’s ready to drink. Ice is optional with cold brew since it’s already chilled. Cold brewed tea can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
