Looking for Golden Larches without the crowds of Maple Pass? 📌 Save this trail! Golden larches, a historic fire lookout & 360° views, with far fewer people than the Highway 20 hikes. 📍 Goat Peak Lookout Trail: Mazama, WA (Methow Valley). From Mazama, drive east on Goat Creek Rd 1.8 mi, then follow FS-52 & forest roads ~12 mi to the trailhead. 🚗 Road: Rough, rocky, gravel. Plan ~45 - 50 min from Mazama & go slow. 🥾 Hike: 3.6 mi round trip, ~1,450 ft gain, 7,001 ft summit. Moderate: steady climb, some steep bits, then a brief ridge walk. 🍂 Larches: Golden along the upper trail & slopes near the summit. Peak is usually early-mid Oct, so check recent trip reports. 👀 Views: Methow Valley below, Gardner Range to the south & glaciated Silver Star Mountain to the southwest. 🔒 Lookout is locked (staffed only in storms), but the views are worth it. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family tips: • Pack snacks & a summit lunch. • Bring layers, it’s windy & cold at 7,000 ft. (There was fresh snow on our visit in early October). • Let kids set the pace and take plenty of breaks. • Leave early, the drive takes time and the trailhead lot is small. • Gas up & download offline maps before heading out. ➡️ Hi!
