I worked in a daycare years ago. Constantly counting the children was a part of my job. It’s unacceptable that anything like this happens.

My son’s school let my 6 yo walk home because he told them he was going to walk today.I pick him up every day. We live a mile away. No call from me, to confirm this. The assistant principal says he told him not to, but did not escort him back inside to wait, So my son kept going. When I came to get him that same principal told me of the interaction and I said, no he’s not ever a walker and I saw the moment he realized he didn’t do his job. My son was lost in the neighborhood. Police were called and I took off and by the grace of God I had put an air tag in his bag the week before. Found him with a gentleman who saw him crying on the sidewalk in front of his house, he also had called the Police for him. I’m thankful he found a nice human being. Could’ve ended so much worse. Sad part is the school didn’t even get in any kind of trouble because my MIL got sick and needed us out of town so the situation blew over. My son is however escorted into the building and out to the car everyday by his teacher so that was the solution they came up with.

As a ECE I ALWAYS count to make sure I have everyone when I leave the classroom and when we come back from outside!

When I was a preschool teacher we constantly were counting the kids, going in or out.. while napping, going into another room or back out. We also had random checks by managers asking our current count. It’s a big responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly

This happened to my friend. Her son was left outside in the rain for hours. She found him when she was picking up, they didn't even notice he wasn't there. She took him inside and went berserk

I went to a daycare that dropped me off at school (private school). I was only in pre-k and apparently school was not in for me that day.
