@relationshipswithaly: When you’re in a cycle of triggering each other’s biggest fears and insecurities, it can feel impossible to become “secure” in your relationship and communication. I want you to know it is possible. You CAN achieve understanding and safety and connection even when you start with such different styles. That’s what the Talk Like You Love Each Other BLUEPRINT is all about. Whether or not your partner is interested, YOU can change these patterns through self-awareness and the right tools. Leave the word “blueprint” and I will send you the tools. Disclaimer: IG is not therapy. This content is for educational and entertainment purposes only. THIS WILL NOT APPLY TO EVERYONE.
We forget that an avoidant person will not have this conversation in the first place..

Psychology research shows that when your nervous system is dysregulated, your brain doesn’t think rationally, it survives. It defaults to the trauma response: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. That’s why fear takes over. That’s why avoidance feels safer than change. You’re not lazy. You’re not broken. Your body is stuck in protection mode. Most of us keep doomscrolling, hoping one more healing tip or viral video will fix everything. But that’s not healing. That’s self-soothing through distraction. You can’t rewire pain while avoiding it. Real healing starts when you stop outsourcing your peace to content and actually face what your nervous system is trying to tell you. It’s raw and uncomfortable, but it’s the only way to get better. If this resonates with you, read Healing Isn’t Pretty by Mira Hartson. It goes deeper than any short video ever could and helps you break your trauma loops the right way.

Can we please stop demonizing avoidance??. Being both anxious and avoidant are BOTH equally harmful. BOTH can be healed when putting in work, and BOTH can end secure and healthy when the work is put in.

As a healing anxiously attached, I truly appreciate this dialogue. It’s very real. The one thing that was very difficult in my relationship with the avoidant wasn’t him needing space to process/regulate. That I could handle. But it never came with reassurance. Ever. Every withdrawal would leave him questioning everything about his life including our relationship. So we would have periods where things were really good, and we were connected. Then the withdrawal happened. And I would give space, quietly most the time because I have learned to self-sooth but at some point it would turn into torture because there was no end time on his “processing” as he called it and then he would let me know that he was questioning our relationship without any other information. So I would not only have to wait out the silence but I was always wondering if this is the withdrawal that would end the relationship. And the last one did unfortunately. I still don’t fully understand why. He couldn’t give me much but to say it wasn’t me, and I didn’t do anything wrong.

As a therapist both the anxiously attached and avoidant have the same work to do- heal their childhood wounds. This is a nervous system dysregulation. Think of it as different emotional metabolisms. Neither is wrong. It’s the way they learned how to survive as children. Both people have wounds they need to heal from.
