@maisonrickie: Today, we cover one of Bourdieu’s most famous ideas: that taste is a weapon of exclusion. Have you ever felt this way? Now that you see the game, what do you think? This is just part 2 of a breakdown of his work so expect lots more to come!

It’s one of the reasons I’m so fascinated by the Anna Delvey story—that she was able to mimic the taste, even to create it, when she wasn’t born into it, something almost nobody can do

I grew up in nerd spaces and this feels like when people drop deep references to test one another and see who is the alpha nerd

The rich dont have taste, they buy it. The artists who pour their heart and soul into making art are the ones with taste. I will never be convinced otherwise.

rich people moving away from mininalism as it became generally popular and achievable bc it's never about actual likes or dislikes, it's just about creating visual distance from the lower classes

« Mimicking elite taste, but always getting it slightly wrong » the perfect example for this nowadays is the ‘ old money’ aesthetic/style that everyone is trying to embrace so desperately

I read somewhere that etiquette works the same way: a set of made up behavioral rules that serves as a way of identifying each other and exclude outsiders

Societies obsession with upper class is.. strange. Read up on history, educate yourselves on how it all came about: the expensive luxuries, the meals, how the families obtained their wealth and so on. Be you. Try new things, expand your taste, but most importantly, remember that taste is subjective. Don’t let someone tell you that something isn’t ELITE bcos their great great grandfather got lucky on an investment over 100 years ago.

Affluence and taste are not synonymous - look at the tastemakers - the artists, the designers, the writers etc. most of them came from a working class or middle class background

As a former Manhattanite, It goes deeper, if you’re not part of this strata you’re not even at the table. You never even got to meet them, you live in a different state, you went to a different school, you have completely different jobs. The chances of your paths crossing is nil.

A couple of yrs back the UK civil service published a report examining why the number of working class reaching senior/gov levels hadn't changed since the 1960s, despite all claims of meritocracy etc. Their conclusion was pretty much the reasons outlined here. Barriers were not particularly related to race, gender or disability etc, more about who you know, who daddy plays golf with, whether you speak with an English RP accent, what you can talk about at the dinner table... It was refreshingly honest. Depressing, but honest

This reminds me of the obsession with “old money aesthetic” here on tiktok. Which is almost always wrong, but that’s kind of besides the point. I find it fascinating that old money is widely accepted as being morally better and more tasteful.
