I’m just surprised that they didn’t do more to improve on the play’s problems in the second act. I thought the whole point of splitting into two films was to make space for course correction of the play’s pacing problems and they…did not do that

This sounds exactly like the criticism I have for the 2nd half of the stage show. I was really hoping Jon would somehow change a d elevate it, but I guess it wasn't possible. Rushed, a bit convoluted with the shoehorning in of the Wizard of Oz plot. And really only 2 songs I like.

The 2nd half is when you have to suspend your belief and not get technical on how it fits in the Wizard of Oz story. And the 2nd half is rushed on the stage too. Was hoping they would fix that with the movie.

This is why I'll only trust reviews of those who've seen the play. It's really not meant to be better it's meant to be darker and more gloomy, the wool is not covering our eyes and the characters are laid bare. They did cover the plot of the initial play and everything you pointed out was a fault of the source material.

Saw the double feature and loved it. It felt like one big movie rather than 2. It picked up where it left off perfectly and ended where it began so good!
