@jonjon.jpeg: You might not want to live in a house with 11 other people — but you might hit a stage in life where paying 30% less for housing matters. That’s what this option offers. Eli at Orange Splot Development created a communal-type home using existing zoning rules. The result is a community-oriented space that some choose because they like it, and others choose because it’s affordable when they need it. It worked thanks to Eli’s creativity and Portland’s flexible zoning. But options like this shouldn’t require creativity. They should be allowed by right. This is Incremental Development: small-scale builders creating homes for their own neighborhoods. #urbanism #incrementaldevelopment #developer #realestate

We are retiring to Portland and will build an ADU for our daughter as well as sharing our house with our best friend. We are our own mini-developers/community builders.

I can see how this would work for some people and should be in all communities. For me, a food allergy household, the shared kitchen was the dealbreaker. But it’s a good idea.

How are things like cleaning, stocking communal goods (soaps, cookware, dishes), furnishing the common spaces handled?

Love it. ADUs are the best. Gainesville, Fl has a really progressive ADU policy. You should check them out :)

Is 30% cheaper cheap enough when the rates are 50% or more higher than they should be?

Speaking of developers- any ideas one what the community can do about the new Peppers development planned on Signal Mtn? The intersection/area is already awful infrastructure wise with two schools’ traffic. It can’t handle 200+ more

I love the idea... but I’m going to be honest, a 30% cost savings is not enough. Living in what is essentially a hostel 24/7, unless you know every co-habiter… obviously these people like it. But I can’t see this being viable on a large scale.

Real Estate Cait :
Thanks for sharing this organization - I’m heavily involved in coliving in Atlanta (we turn SFH’s into affordable shared housing communities). There’s such a need for smaller developments like this that house 8-15 people in regular residential communities, but also so many cities (and people!) who “advocate for affordable housing” yet actively reject development from investors who are meeting that real need for affordable housing. It’s a complex issue that’s misunderstood by so many.
