The reason isn't the "resource curse", it's because their government wants to retain strategic independence from China. As a result, they purposely restrict their dependence on China at the detriment of their growth.

Because Mongolians are anti-China, the price of transporting minerals from Mongolia to China is even higher than buying them from Australia and shipping them to China by sea. Mongolia's railways even use Russian gauge instead of standard gauge, so all ores have to be reloaded at the border. It seems as if Mongolians never intended to do business with China, and I can't think of any reason other than anti-China sentiment.

Well they have no access to water so if Russia and China say they can’t export things through their territory then it’s a no and they can’t do much. And tbh China and Russia are likely to try and bully Mongolia for their resources instead

Hmmm, I wonder if they restricted exports to increase demand, while slowly increasing domestic manufacturing, the price would go up a little, currency would come down a little, ramping up overtime until they achieve more independence and control of their own economy and resources.

Read this if u want the truth not some lies. This happened bc of one man’s death. “Zorig” during the comm to Full democracy people viewed him as Father of Democracy bc he was the only person pushing for everyone to be peaceful and don’t get violent and he played a important role by leading the Mongolian people to peaceful democracy and he was one of the only people pushing the government to strong anti corruption laws and he wanted to pass down laws that prevented government politicians grabbing state owned assets or shares and he wanted a slow and responsible privatization of states not just giving anything to anyone and he wanted control over key resources like minings such as Oyu Tolgoi and Erdenet these big names could’ve benefited the whole country and they could’ve made a sovereign wealth fund like Norway did and no one is allowed to touch it. But bc of this man’s assassination everything that needs punishment went unpunished bc this man wasn’t there to stop it. He was one of the only man who wanted nothing but better for the people not chasing after money.

You’re missing a lot. Incredible corruption. Extraction of resources (wealth) by Canadian, French, and Australian companies.
