@bonemuseum: Do bones at the Bone Museum contain lead? 🦴🔬 Today we’re using an X-ray fluorescent spectrometer to find out, and the answer isn’t as straightforward as you’d think. Lead can enter bone for many reasons: from historical preservation chemicals used in the medical bone trade… to lifetime exposure during the individual’s life. Because bone acts like a long-term storage system for heavy metals, it can hold clues about everything from past occupations and environmental exposure to the preparation methods used after death. Join us as we scan real human bones to see what trace elements are hiding inside, and what their presence can tell us about the life and history of each specimen.
