@pga_v: La palma que camina The walking palm You may have heard of Socratea exorrhiza, the so-called “walking palm,” but it’s not the only one with this remarkable ability. Other palms, such as Eriarthea, also develop stilt roots that allow them to move —sometimes up to one meter per year— in search of better light or nutrients. The way this palm “walks” is fascinating: its trunk never touches the ground. When the tree experiences an ecological change or stress, it produces new roots on the side it intends to move toward, while the opposite ones dry out.
