@stephysays.japan: Would you ever imagine a 3-story wooden double-helix hexagonal shrine? I sure wouldn't 🫨🤣 But Japan did! 🧬What do I mean by double-helix? Think DNA- two swirls going around but never touching. One spiral goes up, you cross over the hump at the top, and you come back down another spiral. It's really amazing! 🪷Along the way inside the temple, there are 33 statues of the bodhisattva Kannon (Avalokiteshvara), aka the goddess of compassion. Worshippers can stop at all 33 statues without blocking the way thanks to the up and down path never meeting 🪵Another thing I enjoyed was the details... from the carvings, to the blue kanji over the entrance, to the stickers all around the wooden walls (special Buddhist stickers of visitors' names) 😮This temple was built in 1796, and it's a true wonder, even by today's standards I'm my opinion! Haha 📍Sazaedo Temple 会津さざえ堂 (円通三匝堂) 🇯🇵Aizu-Wakamatsu City, Fukuoka Prefecture (Tohoku Region), Japan 🚃Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, then take a bus , taxi, or walk 2.3km (1.4mi) 🏯Also in the same town is Tsuruga Castle, which looks nice! 🍁November 2, 2025 🔗If you wanna know more about visiting the temple, I enjoyed reading Fukushima Travel's article https://fukushima.travel/blogs/5-reasons-to-visit-sazaedo-temple/71 #sazaedo #aizuwakamatsu #fukushima #japantravel #buddhisttemple
