@hd.physics: Scientists at IBM Zurich captured this groundbreaking image of a pentacene molecule using non-contact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM). By using a probe tip terminating in a single carbon monoxide molecule, they were able to physically "feel" the electron density of the atoms. An AFM works by: • scanning an insanely sharp tip across the molecule • measuring tiny changes in force • reconstructing a map of electron density It’s not photons hitting a sensor like a camera. It’s more like: the microscope “feels” the shape of the molecule, then renders it as an image.
