@hd.physics: Scientists at IBM Zurich captured this groundbreaking image of a pentacene molecule using non-contact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM). By using a probe tip terminating in a single carbon monoxide molecule, they were able to physically "feel" the electron density of the atoms. The resulting image reveals the precise hexagonal structure of carbon rings and the bonds connecting them, showing us for the first time that the molecular diagrams we draw in chemistry class are actually real. #chemistry #physics #molecule #Science #microscopy

Cool, but quantum physics gets EVEN smaller than just atoms. Zoom in far enough and you’ll see that NOTHING is solid, everything is just made of vibrational patterns.

An AFM works by: • scanning an insanely sharp tip across the molecule • measuring tiny changes in force • reconstructing a map of electron density It’s not photons hitting a sensor like a camera. It’s more like: the microscope “feels” the shape of the molecule, then renders it as an image.

it's not actually a picture of a molecule, but a map of electron densities between nuclei. It's made using non-contact Atomic Force Microscopy (NC-AFM) and it's a fascinating part of molecular research!

The bees know what’s up. Maybe the electrons are fields of tiny flying insects.

Technically not chemical bonds, but covalent bonds. Atoms sharing electrons is what keeps all matter together.

H-shaped structures but not seeing the “bonds.” Noteworthy, H-shape is super common in nature which points to efficient building and maintenance but does not point to origin or 🧬
