HER STORY: Carminia Lourdes Cynthia A. Gutierrez, or Chin-Chin Gutierrez, began her public life as a model at 16. She quickly rose to fame, becoming a celebrated face in fashion and advertising. Her natural beauty, confident personality, and genuine charm made her a top endorser for major print and advertising campaigns in the Philippines, as well as in Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. Chin-Chin's journey as an actress started in her teens when she was cast as Maria Clara in the Cultural Center of the Philippines' 1991 TV version of "Noli Me Tangere" by National Artist Eddie Romero. This early opportunity paved the way for her to work alongside the country's most talented directors, writers, and performers over the years. Her early success in film was marked by a Gawad Urian Award for Best Supporting Actress in "Maalaala Mo Kaya: The Movie" in 1994, along with a PMPC Star Award nomination. Since then, she has consistently received award nominations for both lead and supporting roles, and become a highly respected actress in the Philippines. Chin has appeared in over 20 films, including 6 international productions, and has twice been recognized as one of Asia's best actresses. Besides acting career, she was a respected environmental advocate. Time Magazine recognized her as an "Asian Hero" in 2003 for using her fame to promote ecological awareness. She also received the 2004 TOWNS Award for her environmental work. In 2006, she established Alaga LAHAT, Inc., a foundation dedicated to ecological wellness and sustainable living, where she serves as Founding Chair and President. Her expertise in Environmental Education makes her a sought-after speaker and lecturer, discussing ecological waste management, sustainable development, the connection between ecology and spirituality, consumer choices, and women's initiatives related to the environment. Chin-Chin also noted as defender of Philippine heritage, recognized for her work as an artist and independent record producer. Her debut musical project, "Uyayi: A Collection of Philippine Lullabies," won the 2004 Catholic Mass Media Award. She earned international recognition, including performances in France, Paris, Sydney, Los Angeles and Japan. Her second album, "Mater Vitae: Whispers of A New World," features hymns from various Philippine sacred traditions. The year 2006 was a year of devastating tragedy. Her family's ancestral house burned down into ashes, and 23 days after, her mother died due to complications from a chronic disease. She describes it as if "her whole life had been swallowed by a bottomless pit." Overwhelmed by the void left by her mother's passing, she found comfort in an image of Our Lady of Lourdes and a renewed connection to her faith. Through prayer, she learned to embrace her sorrow and find solace in a deeper relationship with God and Mary. In 2010, her house was razed by fire once again. That same year, Chin described this as a "grand leap of faith", marking a turning point where she entrusted everything to God. She made a major decision to let go and surrender everything. She left her family, friends, career, advocacies, and lucrative success in the prime of her life to serve the Church in its apostolates. Through all her personal experiences, Chin's faith grew stronger than ever. She experienced a spiritual awakening and a deep calling to serve God that led her to pursue a consecrated life. However, instead of embracing one of canonically defined paths, like marital life or religious orders, she has chosen to be a consecrated lay person. Today, Chin-Chin Gutierrez has chosen to live a private life as a consecrated lay, and dedicating her life to prayer, theological study, and service within the Church.
