Respectfully as a math teacher, I teach both ways and let my students decide which they prefer.

I feel like it depends on the numbers. In this instance the Chinese way was easier because the division was simple, but if the numbers become more complex the American way may be easier. Granted, they both have division in the end so I'm not sure and am biased towards the American way.

As an American we learned both ways… sometimes it’s appropriate to understand distribution and how to use it, but I certainly have learned both methods while in school as a child.

I learned the distribution property first and THEN we learned the other way. so I learned both ways. because my math teacher said some people do one way better and some people do the other way better but they both get the answer and she didn't care which we used on tests

what is happening why can't we just do x + 5 = 5x * 2 is 10x doesn't equal 8 so it's ≠ and then boom that's your answer
