Reposted from @reelsclassics 🎻✨ Johann Sebastian Bach — Air (Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068) Seiji Ozawa — NHK Symphony Orchestra 🎶 • Nobody calls this piece by its real name. Bach wrote "Air" — an instrumental aria with no poetic title. In 1871, violinist August Wilhelmj transposed the melody down an octave so it could be played entirely on the violin's G string. The arrangement became more famous than the original. And the name that stuck — "Air on the G String" — belongs to Wilhelmj, not Bach. In this video, the piece returns to its original version: orchestral strings in D Major, no solo violin. • Bach probably composed Suite No. 3 in Köthen, where he served as music director for a Calvinist court that didn't use music in worship. Free from the church, he wrote pure instrumental music. The suite has five movements featuring trumpets, oboes, and timpani — but in the Air, Bach stripped everything away. What remains are four string voices and a bass line walking in continuous eighth notes, like a pulse that sustains without drawing attention. It's the only movement in the entire suite where the brass and woodwinds fall silent. • Before Karajan, before Bernstein, before 29 years in Boston, Bach was the beginning for Ozawa. When the family returned from Manchuria in 1944, the nine-year-old boy started piano with Bach's works — on an instrument his brothers had hauled from Yokohama to Tachikawa in a handcart, three days on the road. In this video, Ozawa conducts without a baton, hands open, fingers shaping every phrase. The musicians lean toward him as they play — the same orchestra that, 32 years earlier, hadn't shown up. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music, daily in your feed. • • • #bach #classicalmusic #orchestra #violin
