10 years ago today, Gus performed one of the most recognizable shows of his career at a small venue in Downtown Los Angeles. It took place the same day he met Tracy for the first time, and the two recorded “white tee” and its music video in the driveway of 1700 University Drive, where much of “Crybaby” was made in the spring of 2016. By the time this show took place on May 7, 2016, Gus had made seven songs for “Crybaby.” He had gotten the mixtape’s title tattooed above his eye back in April, and shortly after commissioned artist Nick Everitt to create its iconic artwork. Gus was very specific about his vision, requesting a dove with his “Crybaby” script and “lots of tears.” He was thrilled with the art Nick sent back and decided to put it on a shirt. The design would become one of Gus’s most beloved among fans, emerging from a period in which he was working entirely independently. On May 2, he ordered 25 white “Crybaby” t-shirts that he later put up for sale. On May 7, Gus was introduced to Tracy for the first time through mutual friend Nedarb. According to Tracy, they had “barely spoken two words” before making “white tee,” then recorded its music video in the driveway. Killstation, their videographer, filmed the footage in one take with a VHS camera that was almost too heavy to hold. Later, Tracy accompanied Gus and Nedarb to a show in DTLA, where Gus was still wearing his “Crybaby” shirt. He was photographed in it that night and filmed during his first-ever performances of some of the “Crybaby” tracks. This show took place at a pivotal moment in Gus’s career, during the making of one of his most beloved projects and as he was meeting and collaborating with artists in Los Angeles whom he had admired for a long time. He was independent and excited about the future, writing in a message the day after the show: “I’m having fun and doing good work. Didn’t get paid much but that will change soon.” Gus believed in himself and the music he was creating, and he was excited to show “Crybaby” to the world. Video by NIGHT[SPAWN] on YouTube
