This is why we need a vancancy tax. An exponential tax that will go up whenever land is unused or unoccupied in major areas. This tax would have no cap and would keep growing in cost month after month for the owner. After it reaches a certain threshold, if they don’t pay the tax, the land is seized by the government.

Nobody here understands the basic economic incentives about the situation. The owner will want to develop the land, but if it costs more to develop it than to just leave it barren then they won’t. Changing the tax situation will not change this, the property isn’t being sold to anyone because the person wanting to buy it also knows that it will cost more to develop it than hold it, making it a bad investment. This situation is bad for the community, why would we want a situation in which people want to build up an area literally can’t do so because they are suffocated by the costs of living there. How the hell does taxing these people more make it more affordable for the land to be developed? How is this not just advocating for the government taking people’s property from them?

guys. there is alot of land plots like this that are too contaminated to build on due to dumping from previous factories or other sites. if a place like this is near you and is filled with little 3 ft posts. the ground is probably filled with chemicals you dont want to dig up

it's even worse when it comes to Farmland. we have a ton of unused farmland here in BC because investors bought the land hoping for rezoning and a lot of Munis won't allow that (which is good) but now it just sits empty... not being used for farming, so that eventually years later they can reapply to the city and go "whelp it's been empty all this time just change it!!"

not sure what you are talking about, I pay municipal taxes on the value of both the value of the house AND the value of the land. Since I am in a city the land value is actually greater than the house value.
