@haleykloha: People talk about trafficking like it is random or mysterious, but the truth is that it usually grows out of the violence happening inside a home long before a trafficker ever shows up. Domestic violence creates almost every major risk factor we see in research. Unstable housing, poverty, lack of safe adults, runaway episodes, prior abuse, emotional neglect and the normalization of control all make young people easier to target. Traffickers do not need to be brilliant. They simply walk into the gaps created by the adults who were supposed to protect the child in the first place. If we want to prevent trafficking, we have to be honest about where the danger actually begins and stop pretending it lives somewhere outside our own communities.
