I've never had a toner save me on 120v circuits. The fluke toner that changes tone on short really shines when you're tracing down 66block phone lines or class b fire alarm heat sensors or notification appliance circuits that only run point to point and can't be branched.

yo, had a similar 30minute service call turned into a month's labour. the owner put a #14 on a 2pole 70amp Sylvania breaker. the basement ceiling had several renovation, 4 layers including plywood with melted buried jbs everywhere. keep it simple at first then eventually the toner can make an appearance.
