“Wife” comes from “Wif” which just meant “Woman”. “Mid” means “With”: a midwife is anyone who is ‘with the woman’ during labour.

I think (and please don’t quote me on this but) it’s because mid-wives are traditionally older women who are married and have had kids of their own. Tho that changed later on when nuns became common in the practice.
