Like Talking Leaf said, Billy was named after Captain Billy. Also known as Wilford Hamilton Fawcett, the founder of Fawcett comics. Unfortunately Mr Fawcett died the day of Whiz Comics 2 release(Feb 7 1940), so he wasn’t able to see what a sensation his namesake would become. His sons kept Fawcett alive for as long as they could. Every time I see Billy I can’t help but think of his originator, who started out as this kid who ran away from home to join the war front, and who wanted to make his fellow soldiers laugh despite the grim times. Billy Batson is so much more than a last resort for the wizard Shazam. It’s criminal what’s been done to him since new52.
