@thebiocosmos: These fantastic videos were taken from a paper published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine in 2014 titled "Leukotriene B4 amplifies eosinophil accumulation in response to nematodes". The visual response that these videos show is fantastic. The paper described a very simple mechanism of how eosinophils - a type of leukocytes that are responsible for protecting the body from parasites - swarm their target. If you remember not too long ago I posted a video about neutrophil swarming? Well, these eosinophils can do the same and they use the same signaling molecule, Leukotriene B4 or LTB4! These cells release LTB4 to recruit more of themselves to the site. However, what's intriguing is that neutrophils don't response with the same level of intensity towards nematodes like eosinophils do even though they use the same signaling molecule to trigger their swarming. This suggests that there must be a specific pathway that nematodes can trigger just eosinophils. It would also be interesting to see whether eosinophils can recruit neutrophils through a paracrine signaling pathway! Give the paper a read. It's free! #parasite #infection #immunesystem #immunity #biology

now I'm wondering whether we always have little worms floating around in our bodies since we have a dedicated granulocyte for them ...
