I think the second act DOES NOTT build the stakes effectively enough, but I think the intention was that in Oz, Elphaba hit a brick wall and was on a 💀 mission. The ozians were never going to accept elphaba, and if Glinda tried to clear her name then they’d turn on her as well, and then NOTHING would be achieved. Because Glinda is super powerful and has gifts in her own right: top tier relational ability, rhetorical prowess, political instincts, razor sharp understanding of how people work, charm, grace, and her genuine desire to do good. The only way the mission could continue (according to this story) is through Glinda. This makes sense to me. I kind of think of it like the ending of The Dark Knignt when Batman takes the fall for Harvey Dent so that the citizens of Gotham keep their hope and faith in the city and what it could be. Same idea. I agree it felt ODD to me especially on the first watch but I think that’s what they were going for. And I think it strengthens elphaba’s character even more for me because it was never about the applause or the power, only alignment and sacrifice which makes sense for her character

Underground brick road is DIABOLICAL work lmao. I agree with everything you’re saying here, looking at it from a meta standpoint, and as a political commentary, it fires off a few red flags for sure and the story is not as strong as it could’ve been. Theres several areas where I think the movie could’ve been improved. What you’re saying about Elphaba is very understandable, but I also feel like her character turning around and raising the flag gives her character more of a sense of realism, because it’s impossible for someone to dehumanize themselves to the point where they’re just everybody’s savior, without feeling some type of way about everything that they’re losing in the process of fighting for what they believe in. Elphaba is not perfect. She’s strong, but not invincible. Even martyrs have a breaking point. From a narrative standpoint, I love Elphie, but as political commentary it has some weak spots.

The fact that there’s such intense groupthink, dogma, and policing of critique regarding the film franchise is concerning but unsurprising. We’re so primed for fascism and Glinda is an apt symbol for that. Stans continue to prove how dangerous they are.

The issues I have with Act 2 were basically all there in For Good, which is disappointing. Cuz why make two movies if you’re not gonna take those liberties and make improvements?

Yep yep. Wicked is a musical that appeals to white women. Them extending Glinda's story for both the stage show (and even more the movie) is a huge problem.

And let’s be honest, there was no resistance, no actual plan other than i will tell all of oz that the wizard is evil. Ok and?! I didn’t enjoy this film at all. It was such a let down.

I think it’s very clear why she walked away.. After fighting for the animals and hearing them give up and flee, then hearing the wizard say people will continue to believe even if he tells the truth.. it’s the exact same situation as the 92% after so long you get tired of fighting for people who refuse to fight for themselves

I agree that its out of character for elphaba to just agree. She most definitely should have pushed glinda and challenged her claims to do good by BEING THERE to watch her do so. You cant change my mind on the idea that elphaba could have remained “alive” in the eyes of glinda to be by her side for when glinda would finally change. The thing is that glinda did not actually change, which is very clearly shown to us musically, thematically, etc. So its unfortunately a somber message about how marginalized groups will never win. Which is very sad and sucks but it does make sense in the way they wrote it too.

Yes! Politically that ending is a problem. Especially right now, there’s no way they thought that was “For Good”

👏👏👏 the ending should’ve been more “glinda is now STUCK dismantling this system from within because of the horrible choices she made throughout” but instead the ending frames it as dismantling from within is the only solution for oppression period 🥴 like no? dismantling from within should’ve been framed much more tragically and not optimistically

Not to mention Ariana being cast as Glinda completely overshadowed the character and her actions from the beginning.

I think the messaging would have hit better had glindas character arc actually been good in the second act. but imo they utterly fail at getting glinda to take any accountability for her actions for me to really beleive that she's changed. on top of that when she goes and does for good, during that song or leading right up to it... it should have been made apparent to elphaba that glinda has changed and that she can do the things that elphaba can't; except the movie ultimately fails imo to convince me the audience that it's obvious that glinda changed.

Kamala being elphabas, Glinda being Biden the ending was needed. This is the reality of the narrative! Elphaba realized and knew that they would only listen to Glinda. To them elphaba was the animal ……..that message is the reality we are living in!

Really?? She gives it over to her and she does the right thing, immediately. She KNOWS Glinda. She knew she would do it right by her. No one was going to change their minds about her, it’s the truth!

When Elphaba says “they need someone to blame even if it’s not true” and we’re supposed to just be ok with that 😭

It’s just so frustrating that they changed the ending so nobody dies so they could market the movie to kids as they’re next princess role models 😭 it feels like they sacrificed the whole story for capitalism.

Vì | Golden☆Starlight :
i've said it in other comment sections that in the musical (that's more fast paces so it... sorta... works) the ending has elphaba finally resting and being selfish for once, while glinda for the first time in her life is confronted with the consequences of her actions, and it's implied that atoning for that will take the rest of her life. so between the ending resolving the animal cause in 30 seconds, and the movie expanding a lot of scenes but none of the ones that actually matter for this messaging, the entire meaning of the story changes

I think in this climate it was an interesting choice to have a black woman (I know elphaba is green 🙄) tell a white woman that she’s limited and leave change up to her. It’s an interesting decision for how political the movie was and they had more time for it. Emotionally I still love it and still relate the the emotions of these characters but that’s something I noticed
